Alleged Assault: Senate Orders Investigation of CCT Chairman

By Deji Elumoye and Udora Orizu The Senate has ordered an immediate investigation into the assault allegations levelled against the Chairman of the Code of Conduct (CCT) Tribunal, Danladi Umar. This was sequel to a petition brought to that effect at Tuesday plenary by Senator Istifanus Gyang (PDP, Plateau North). The President of the Senate, Dr Ahmad Lawan, therefore referred the petition to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions headed by Senator Ayo Akinyelure for immediate investigation. Gyang, while giving a summary of the petition said: “Justice Umar Danladi assaulted him (petitioner), brutalized him and slapped him on the face and asked him to kneel down and, thereby, used his leg to hit him on the chest and inflicted bodily harm on him.”

  The Senate is set to probe an alleged assault on a security guard by the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Umar. During plenary on Tuesday, the upper chamber directed its Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to investigate the matter. The Senate is giving this directive after a Federal Lawmaker from Plateau state, Senator Istifanus Gyang submitted a petition to the Upper Chamber on behalf of the victim, Clement Sargwak. Sargwak had alleged that he was assaulted by the CCT Chairman and a policeman attached to him in March at the popular Banex plaza Abuja where he works as a security guard.

Vanguard News Bringing Danladi Umar to justice On Kindly Share This Story: IN February 2018, the incumbent Minister of State for Labour, Festus Keyamo, as an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, prosecutor, had filed a bribery and judicial racketeering case against Justice Danladi Umar, Chairman, Code of Conduct Tribunal. He was accused of receiving N1.8 million out of alleged N10 million he demanded from one Rasheed Taiwo in 2012. However, after the CCT Chairman’s role in the code of conduct cases against former Senate President, Bukola Saraki and former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, withdrew Keyamo’s case against Umar for “lack of merit”. The case was subsequently struck out by Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Abuja High Court.
