What happened in the Quonset hut at Mayerthorpe, Alta., on March 3, 2005, was a terrible tragedy that will never be forgotten in Canadian history.
The shooting of four young RCMP officers by the deranged James Roszko was something that should never have occurred, but also something that could not have been foreseen.
Neither the RCMP nor the two Mayerthorpe residents used as scapegoats to ensure someone was made to blame for the killings could have known that Roszko intended to massacre as many RCMP officers as possible.
An inquiry into the circumstances leading to the ambush of the four RCMP constables wraps up with final evidence today (Friday). Then it will be up to Justice Daniel Pahl to write recommendations on ways to prevent similar deaths.
