Barbados’ new Constitution could be ready by September.Chairman of the Constitution Reform Commission, retired Justice Christopher Blackman believes the 10-member body should be able to complete the mammoth task of crafting the island’s revised Constitution within the 15-month timeline given by Government.In an interview with Barbados TODAY, Justice Blackman said they had been given 15 months and he saw no reason for it not to be completed by then.“I think so. I don’t see any real reason why it shouldn’t happen,” Justice Blackman responded when asked if he was optimistic the Constitution would be finished by the deadline.

Three judges, Justices Wanda Blair, Westmin James and Anthony L. Blackman, were sworn in on Thursday as their appointments took effect.They were administered the oaths of office by President The Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason who said the trio was “seasoned in the law” and she expected them to do well.Justice James’ appointment is for two years while Justices Blair and Blackman are in their posts for three years.Chief Justice Sir Patterson Cheltenham, who attended the brief ceremony that was also witnessed by family members of the judges, said the judges were “excellent appointments”.
For the second time this year, luxury resort Sandy Lane Hotel has been ordered to pay a former employee for unfair dismissal.The latest ruling was handed down on Wednesday by the Employment Rights Tribunal (ERT) which ordered that former laundry supervisor Alfred Branch, who had been employed at the west coast property for 11 years, be paid just over $54 000 by December 15, 2022.Branch’s lawyer Rhea Cheltenham and attorney-at-law Michael Koeiman who represented Sandy Lane had previously agreed to a basic sum of approximately $50 000 and will not appeal the overall award.Sandy Lane terminated Branch in February 2014, claiming that a letter he wrote the previous month, seeking a meeting with the chairman to discuss outstanding concerns, contained language that management deemed threatening.
