Current restrictions will remain in place until January 25

(Latvian Public Broadcasting) The current restrictions in place to curb the spread of Covid-19 have been extended until January 25, Director of the State Chancellery Jānis Citskovskis said at a remote press conference following government meeting January 5. He said that safety, aid, and control measures will be reviewed in the meantime. Government will on Thursday decide on any changes in safety measures and restrictions. School holidays for grades 1 to 4 have been extended by two weeks, said Education Minister Ilga Šuplinska. This, however, means that the school year will be longer. Pupils in grades 7 to 12 will learn remotely. Government will decide on the learning process for grades 5 and 6 on Thursday.

President Levits says curfew is absolutely necessary

(Latvian Public Broadcasting), Latvijas Radio The curfew and other rules imposed by the government this week are  absolutely necessary ,  said President Egils Levits in an interview to Latvian Radio December 30.  The government s decision on the new restrictions on holiday is necessary because “a small part of society have still not understood, have not realized what must not be done in this situation – one must not infect others”, said Levits. He said that the vast majority of residents are reducing their contacts with others, and he thanked those who comply with the rules in good faith. If these people also started behaving irresponsibly, the country would end up in a totally catastrophic situation, Levits said.

Riga Mayor Mārtiņš Staķis said at a remote press conference on Monday, December 14, that the meeting of the council s Civil Protection Commission analyzed the situation at Saturday s picket, and the City Council will now call on the government to ban pickets in order to avoid a repeat of such situations. Staķis said the restrictions imposed by the council in negotiations with picket organizers had an effect, because the organizers did not go to the Saeima as initially planned and shortened the duration of the picket.
