The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is tripling its capital expenditure for 11 big-ticket railway infrastructure from P90.756 billion this year to P278.3 billion in 2022, at the end of the Duterte administration, with 8 projects either completed or partially operational.
The railway projects set for completion or partial operations within the year until the end of the term of President Duterte include the P9.5 billion LRT-2 East (Masinag) Extension, the P22 billion MRT-3 Rehabilitation, the P3 billion Common Station, the P65 billion LRT-1 Cavite Extension, the P68.2 billion MRT-7, the P50 billion Philippine National Railways (PNR) Clark Phase 1, key facilities of the P357 billion Metro Manila Subway Project, and the P82 billion Mindanao Rail Project, DOTr officials disclosed during a recent virtual briefing.

The Philippine National Railways (PNR) canceled its P921 million contract with Chinese firm CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co., Ltd. for the acquisition of new trains after the Commission on Audit (COA) questioned its procurement and plans to conduct a re-bidding.
“The PNR Board decided to cancel the contract. We are in cancellation proceedings with CRRC Zhuzhou,” Junn Magno, general manager of PNR confirmed in yesterday’s (February 24) virtual presscon.
“We will rebid the project. We are in the pre-procurement process,” he added, without providing further details.
COA questioned PNR’s procurement of train sets (standard gauge Diesel Multiple Unit or DMU) worth P921 million from CRRC Zhuzhou in its 2019 annual audit report.

Another historic milestone and remarkable event for the Philippines’ railway sector has been unveiled, and government officials and partners witness the arrival of the Cutter Head of ‘KAUNLARAN’, the first among the six Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) intended for use in the partial operability section of the first ever underground railway system of the country.
The Cutter Head is the largest part of the TBM, weighing 74 tons. Its main purpose is to break, cut and grind rocks and soil by rotating its 36-piece disc cutter, composed of 15 pieces of single and 21 pieces of twin Roller Cutter (RC).

It has been 50 years since PNR acquired mainline locomotives and the first time after more than 40 years that the PNR Metro Commuter Rail Line will be served by a new fleet said PNR General Manager Junn Magno.
