A meteor was seen exploding twice, on the night of the second fair (3/21), over the coast of Rio Grande do Sul. An image lasted just 2.4 seconds and was captured during the North March Virginids meteor shower, as 10:30 p.m. Second Heller & Jung.
“It lasted seven seconds and could be seen by many people. It was a Fireball. It entered the atmosphere at an altitude of 80 km and was extinguished at an altitude of 42 km. Last year, only seven of this magnitude or more were registered, ”said Jung to G1.
Last October, the same observatory registered another fireball over the border between Rio Grande do Sul and Uruguay. At the time, Jung stated that the meteor was the largest, in size and magnitude , recorded in Rio Grande do Sul, since 2016.
According to the Brazilian Meteor Monitoring Network (Bramon), 2020 was the year with the highest number of high magnitude meteors since 2016, when this type of phenomenon began to be observed and recorded in Brazil.
