K-pop band BTOB’s rapper under probe on alleged marijuana use December 22, 2020 K-pop band BTOB’s rapper Jung Il-hoon was apprehended by the police earlier this year for allegedly smoking marijuana on multiple occasions, according to law enforcement authorities. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said Monday they referred the 26-year-old rapper, together with accomplices, to the prosecution in July, with recommendations to indict him for violating the Narcotics Control Act. Jung is accused of repeatedly using marijuana he bought secondhand through his acquaintance. He was found to have paid for the drug with cryptocurrency, according to police. It was also revealed that he began his mandatory military service as a public service worker in May while under investigation.

A report by Korean broadcasting network Channel A on Dec. 21 stated that the police investigated Ilhoon’s habitual drug use. The police determined that Ilhoon smoked marijuana several times with acquaintances from four to five years ago until last year based on the statements of his accomplices and account tracking. The drug was also detected in Ilhoon’s hair. To avoid detection, Ilhoon allegedly used cryptocurrency to buy the drugs. He deposited cash in an account of an acquaintance who converted it to cryptocurrency to buy marijuana.

Ilhoon was busted by Korean police for using marijuana several times and is facing a case of violating Korea’s Narcotics Control Act, which prohibits the smoking, carrying and trading of the narcotic. The case against Ilhoon and his accomplices were transferred by the police to the prosecution in July and it was recommended that they be indicted for drug charges. An exclusive report by Korean media outlet SpoTV News said Ilhoon spent 100 million won for his marijuana use. He deposited the 100 million won cash in an account of an acquaintance, who converted it to cryptocurrency to avoid police detection.
