Juneteenth volunteers and supporters gather following another successful âTaste of the Southâ community fundraiser last Friday evening.
The Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation announced today that it has a newly created fund, The Juneteenth Endowment Fund.
“After 25 years of work, we are so excited to have the seeds of permanent funding and support planted with the creation of the Juneteenth Endowment Fund at the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation,” said Loretta Slaton Torain and Sandra Lewis. Torain is the chair of Juneteenth of Northern Chautauqua County, and Lewis is the Finance Chair for the organization.

POTSDAM The second annual Potsdam community-wide Juneteenth Celebration will be held on Saturday, June 19 from 4 to 9 p.m., at the Ives Park Gazebo, behind the Clarkson Inn at 1 Main St.
“The Juneteenth Celebration Organizing Committee (JCOC) is proud to present this family-friendly event to celebrate the culture of African-Americans and provide a space for Black voices to be honored,” said member Sherry Long.
The public is invited to learn about Juneteenth and African-American culture through heritage-rich traditional foods, entertainment, and activities for all ages.
“Juneteenth is Freedom Day for African-Americans, a celebration to mark the day when the last remaining American slaves learned they were finally free from bondage,” Long said.

Santa Monica was looted after a peaceful protest devolved into a riot in the Downtown area. Hundreds of people held a protest at Ocean and Montana following several days of protests across the country calling for justice for George Floyd, a black man who was killed by a Minneapolis police officer. At about 2 p.m., organized criminal gangs flooded the city targeting the mall and downtown businesses. Hundreds of stores were damaged or looted as criminals roamed unimpeded throughout parts of town while police clashed with protesters near the pier using tear gas to disperse the crowd. Order was restored in the early evening following the arrival of the National Guard and mandatory curfews.
