The outback town of Coober Pedy is considering giving away 40 abandoned properties for free if the prospective new owners are prepared to develop the real estate.
The famed opal mining centre will have 17 above-ground houses, four underground homess, and 19 vacant land lots up for grabs in June after repossessing the property from owners who did not pay many years worth of council rates.
While regular sales would be considered, the council said a nominal fee of $1 could be accepted in some circumstances.
