many different nations but i think you ll have a very positive result in the end. paul: that was president trump friday announcing that the june 12th summit with president kim jong un is back on after meetings this week with secretary of state mike pompeo and a top north korean official. those meetings tapped off by visit to the white house friday where north korean delegation delivered a letter from kim jong un to president trump. earlier i spoke with refired four-star general jack keane about the expectations for the june 12th meeting. so we have the report of a letter from kim jong un to president trump, apparently saying i want to have the meeting, but no demands and no concessions, is that enough to go ahead with a summit? well, first of all, i think that the letter is in response to president trump s letter to kim jong un and he ended his letter when he was terminating the summit, get back to me if you want to go forward. that s kind of what this is. kim yong-chol traveled to washington to hand-deliver this letter to president trump. this is on behalf of kim jong-un. president trump then telling reporters at the white house he d read the, quote, very nice, very interesting letter. then he said this. i haven t seen the letter yet. i purposely didn t open the letter. i haven t opened it. i didn t open it in front of the director. i said, would you want me to open it? he said, you can read it later. i may be in for a big surprise, folks. you know, talking about the letter. now, what is in the letter? we re here to try to report that out, even if the president wasn t so forthcoming, but a foreign government official familiar with it has basically said that it was quote fairly basic, expressing the north korea s leader s interest in meeting, without making any significant concessions or threats. north korea didn t promise denuclearization, but it s still getting this potentially historic meeting with a u.s. president. here s john br
summit. trump can get something useful out of the meeting. we ve got to go to a partial type of victory, maybe getting rid of the missiles or eliminating the missile program. what would kim want he said several times that he wants a denuclearization of the entire peninsula, reportedly, which would include requirements for the u.s. to pull out some of its forces, missile defense systems there in the south. do you envision a scenario at all where that s plausible for the u.s. to pulls it forces, its resources out of the south? i think actually that may be abe viable option. i don t think the national security bureaucracy is going to stand for it. i think that both jimmy carter and donald rumsfeld in two administrations made statements that said, you know, our our military presence there is outdate. we could look at a wider settlement, but you d have to include china, as well, if the
before when when trump was threatening to use nuclear weapons against north korea with fire and fury or my nuclear button is bigger than yours, both sides were going back and forth with nasty rhetoric that could have led to war. this is a better alternative than that. i think we re, you know i support him trying to do this. it is very unorthodox. there are high risks involved. let s talk about expectations, what the expectations were and what they are now. first we ll hear from the president back in the rose garden. this was april 30th. then what the president said just yesterday. watch. i think the summit s going to happen. they very much like it. we certainly would like to see it. i think the summit will happen. personally, i think it s going to be a success, but we ll see. i will say this if it s not a success, if it s not get rid of the nuclear weapons. if it s not a success, i will respectfully leave. it will be a beginning i ve
