Senior Kashmiri Hurriyat leader, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, who challenged India’s hegemonic rule over Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir for decades, died on May 05, 2021 while in police custody. He was 77.
Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai was born in Tekipora (Lolab) in Kupwara in 1944. Sehrai completed his primary education in his hometown Tekipora and secondary education from Sogam Lolab High School in 1959. After clearing secondary examination, he did Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Urdu. He was considered one of the fluent and great orators and could speak tirelessly for hours. Booked under draconian Public Safety Act, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai was on July 12, 2020 shifted to Udhampur Jail in Jammu. His condition deteriorated in jail, but was not given timely access to doctors and was only shifted, to Jammu Government Medical College on May 04, where he breathed his last.

Srinagar: Detained since July 2020, Kashmiri separatist leader and Tehreek-e-Hurriyat chairman Muhammad Ashraf Khan Sehrai passed away at a government hospital in Jammu on Wednesday, May 5. He was 78.
Popular as ‘Sehrai’, the leader was shifted to the hospital after he complained of breathlessness in Udhampur jail, where he has been since July 12, 2020 under the Public Safety Act.
Sehraiâs son Raashid said he called home 10 days ago and said, âI am ill, have grown weak, feel dizzy and cannot move. The jail authorities are not providing me any treatment.”

MIRPUR (Dunya News) – Illustrious APHC (All Parties Hurriyat Conference) leader and Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir Chairman Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai breathed his last, while in Indian custody in occupied Jammu after a brief illness on Wednesday, said a report from across the line of control (LoC).
