The US blacklisted Xiaomi due to a Chinese award given to its founder
In mid-January, the Donald Trump administration in the United States blacklisted several Chinese companies, including Xiaomi. They were accused of being owned by the Chinese military or having very strong ties to the Chinese communist government.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Xiaomi was blacklisted because the founder of the company, Lei Jun, was honored with the “Outstanding Builder of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics”.
In response to the company’s blacklisting, Xiaomi issued a public statement confirming that it has no ties to the Chinese government and does not belong to the Chinese military. Xiaomi stressed that the company continued to comply with all legal protocols in its business operations and the US government has no evidence of any violations.
