Black farmers that were part of the Pigford class action suit must pay a fee of $146,000, more than double that paid by others. Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried wants an investigation into the rule's intent.
Other Black students in Ocoee will also be eligible for the funds. The scholarship will be a $305,000 recurring appropriation from the state s general fund and will be available indefinitely, according to Bracy.
In the days leading up to November 2, 1920, Ku Klux Klan members marched through Black neighborhoods in Ocoee, threatening Black residents not to vote. In defiance of the threats, Mose Norman, a Black Ocoee resident, made multiple attempts to reach the ballot box, but each time he was turned away by white poll workers.
After the polls closed, a mob of deputized white men carrying guns came in search of Norman, who was thought to have taken refuge in the home of his friend, Julius July Perry. Norman wasn t there, but Perry fought back, engaging in a gunfight with members of the mob. OCOEE, Fla. – It’s been more than 100 years since dozens of African Americans were killed by a white mob to keep them from voting on election day in 1920.
The mob surrounded the home of Julius “July” Perry. When Perry shot back to defend himself, the mob called Orlando and Orange County for reinforcements. Some of the African Americans were lynched and their homes burned.

“The state played a role, they deputized the mob at that time and then they didn’t do the proper investigation, so they were complicit in this massacre. I think it’s appropriate that the state play a role in addressing the redress of the descendants,” Sen. Randolph Bracy said.
The passage of the bill comes after both Democrats and Republicans, including Gov. Ron DeSantis, hailed Florida’s administration of the November 2020 election as a model for the nation.

Florida’s legislature on Thursday night became the latest to approve far-reaching legislation imposing new rules on voting and new penalties for those who do not follow them, passing a measure critics said would make it harder for millions of voters to cast ballots in the Sunshine State.
Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, who named voting security one of his top legislative priorities this year, is widely expected to sign the bill in coming weeks.
