Australian customers of web hosting giant Amazon have backed its decision to kick controversial social networking platform Parler off its servers in the wake of deadly riots at the US Capitol, despite concerns the move could set a troubling precedent.
The obscure social network positioned itself as a bastion of free expression as Facebook and Twitter cracked down on hate speech, leading to an influx of far-right users. Parler has won support among Trump supporters in the United States. Nationals MP George Christensen and former conservative politician Cory Bernardi have both set up Parler accounts which are followed by a relatively small number of users.
