UK, Netherlands, Germany, Jamaica chasing Ghana for nurses – Health Minsiter-designate

Health Minister-designate, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu Minister-designate of Health, Kweku Agyeman-Manu, has revealed that a lot of Western countries among others, are chasing Ghana for nurses. The Health Minister in President Nana Akufo-Addo’s first term made the revelation during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, 10 February 2021 after a member of the committee, Mr James Agalga, demanded to know why Ghana, despite not having enough health professionals, exported some nurses to Trinidad & Tobago as well as Barbados. “I will say bilateral relations for diplomacy, just like we receive Chinese and other foreigners, I believe our President stretched his hand to also help our neighbours who needed some support. That is the significant thing”, Mr Agyeman-Manu mentioned as the primary reason.

QEH takes steps to further protect staff and patients

Barbados Today February 6, 2021 The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is stepping up its fight in the protection of staff and patients in the fight against COVID-19. As the number of COVID-19 cases rise island-wide, with more patients presenting to the hospital for care, and with community contact being the principal cause of cases among QEH staff having grown from 10 to 19 in a staffing complement of 2,500, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is increasing measures to keep staff safe and protect patients. This assurance was given by Executive Director of the QEH, Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland, to all levels of staff in the hospital in a Weekly Report issued on February 5.

January 26, 2021 There has been a tremendous response to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s (QEH) call for retired registered nurses and nursing assistants to return to the frontline. Executive Chairman of the QEH Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland said within hours of an informal call being shared on social media on Sunday evening, people have been calling and sending messages inquiring about how they can make their services available. Bynoe-Sutherland said she was pleased with the response at this time during the fluid COVID-19 pandemic, when the hospital is revealing plans to create a pool of at least 50 “back-up” nurses. “The response is more than I could have anticipated. So many nurses, various categories of nurses have reached out wanting to give assistance. People are responding and we have not even put the formal notice out.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Juliette Bynoe Sutherland, Executive Chairman of the QEH, explained she was looking to expand the pool of backup staff. She said, “We are in need of retired Registered Nurses and Nursing Assistants to expand our pool of backup staff.” Bynoe Sutherland said the QEH also has full-time vacancies for Registered Nurses. She explained, “We do not take transfers of nurses from [Psychiatric] Hospital or [Geriatric] Hospital or Polyclinics as it leaves them terribly short.”
