Mayor Valérie Plante is calling on the Quebec government to designate Chinatown as a heritage site, like Old Montreal.
In a letter Thursday to Culture and Communications minister Nathalie Roy, the mayor notes that the historic district is facing pressure from real-estate development, raising worries about the loss of its architectural heritage.

Given the city’s limited powers to protect historic buildings, “we believe that the district must now obtain heritage protection in order to preserve the cultural and heritage future of Chinatown,” Plante wrote.
