Jintao Zhai/Correspondent Wicked Local Asian Americans and police officers must work together to tackle anti-Asian hate and mitigate Asian underrepresentation in public services, said Belmont Police Chief James Maclsaac at an April 7 Zoom meeting hosted by the Belmont Pan-Asian Coalition. MacIsaac said he is concerned that some Asian Americans fear coming to the Belmont Police Department for help or have trouble articulating their problems due to language barriers when he tries to facilitate police-resident communication. “My biggest hope is to let everyone in the Asian community know that we’re always available and will help in any way possible. We must knock down the wall [of communication] and connect police officers and residents who need help,” said MacIsaac.

Jintao Zhai/Correspondent Wicked Local Asian Americans in Belmont are rallying around a common anti-racism cause to address underrepresentation in Belmont’s organizations and reduce racial tensions, according to Julie Wu, senior member of the town’s Pan-Asian Coalition. She said Asians make up nearly 20% of the town’s population but are underrepresented in the town’s committees. Among nine members of the Diversity Task Force, only two are of Asian descent, said Wu, 54, a Taiwanese American who co-founded the coalition in mid-March. Wu said she had sent the Select Board a petition requesting representation of Asian residents in the Task Force, with 176 signatures included, and Select Board Chairman Roy Epstein acknowledged receiving it afterward but no action has yet been taken as of press time.
