votes to move forward. they made great advances on this issue, but they may not have the numbers to move forward this year on gun control. but they could compromise with republicans. i think most democrats agree that mental health is a huge challenge. julie: in this case mental health was the number one problem. this person was red flaged. police visited their home several times. she shot up his mother s home with whom he lived, suffered ptsd, a former veteran. obviously, something slipped through the cracks. mentally ill are going to get their hands on gun whethers they re banned or not. look, there s been a seed change on this issue. democrat, for 20 years ran away from this issue. and this year 15 republicans who had a ratings with the nra running against democrats who had f ratings, they won and ran on gun control. unfortunately it s because in large part that the litany of horrors that the american people have seen, through mass shootings of children, in places
and we say i think as a group, god bless everybody. julie: president trump addressing the california wild fires at the white house, as crews continue to battle major fires on the northern and southern parts of the state. outside los angeles, santa ana winds are making it harder after flames burned down hundreds of homes. thousands of square miles. jonathan hunt is live in malibu. the destruction is just hard to believe. you re there on the ground. we re seeing opl picture of flare-ups as well there today. reporter: just in the last hour we had a major fire flare-up. this was north of us across the santa monica mountains behind me. in this areas called lake sherwood. flames didn t take hold in an
allowed back into their homes yet, jonathan? reporter: in a few areas affected initially by the woolsey fire, yes. but in many other, no. the city of malibu still effectively sealed off to the public. when the hundreds of homeowners who ve lost their homes get back, these are the kind of scenes they are going to see, julie. pretty much nothing left for the owner of this home. filing cabinets, you can see, just chimney stack. you see that so often in these situations. so often the only thing that remains standing. i can tell you along this particular street in malibu, julie, there are about a dozen homes completely and utterly destroyed. just some of the hundreds that have been razed to the ground by the fires. going to be a very, very tough time ahead for the residents who come back to this sort of scene.

himself. recusal is a tough spot for the president. whitaker recusing himself, how would that sit with the president? well, i think it s important to remember that the attorney general is not the president s lawyer. that s an idea that this president has been unable to accept. and he or she is not there to do this president s bidding. they are there for the entire country. and so the fact that the president may want to have his or her mouth piece in the department is really irrelevant to the role of the attorney general. certainly their policies, things, initiatives that may be put forth by the administration, but they are not there to simply protect the president. he was upset about sessions doing it. we ll see if whitaker has the backbone to recuse himself. he should do it now and not wait for a court determination. julie: thank you. glad to be with you. julie: amazon is making a big
