La Ronge explores options to get homeless shelter up and running again The Town of La Ronge is scrambling to find options for an emergency homeless shelter after a local agency said it will no longer be providing the service. In a letter to council earlier this month, the Kikinahk Friendship Centre says it will not be offering an overnight homeless shelter this winter due to insufficient funding. The shelter service had been intermittently offered by Kikinahk’s Scattered Site Outreach program in the past. La Ronge Mayor Colin Ratushniak said now is the time to find a solution to the dilemma before the colder weather sets in.

Instead they focused on marking National Indigenous People s Day. Leaders of three northern Saskatchewan communities are pressing “pause” on Canada Day this year and chose instead to focus on marking National Indigenous People’s Day on Monday. Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson said she and the mayors of neighbouring La Ronge and Air Ronge did so to “to honour the 215 children that were discovered, the remains that were discovered… in Kamloops, B.C.,” and “the many other children that didn’t make it from residential school.”
