Catherine Falls Commercial/Getty Images(NEW YORK) Joran van der Sloot, the prime suspect in the unsolved 2005 disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway, will likely be extradited to the United States Tuesday, a source close to the family told ABC News.
Van der Sloot left the Challapalca prison on Saturday as planned. He was then transferred from the Juliaca airport and will be landing in Lima, Peru, by 12 p.m. local time, according to authorities. Peruvian officials confirmed he began his transfer from Challapalca jail to another prison in Lima. He will be transferred to Peruvian Intel service in order to be extradited to the U.S.
The Dutch citizen has been serving a 28-year sentence in Peru for the 2010 murder of 21-year-old college student Stephany Flores.
U.S. Justice Department officials acknowledge that a "temporary surrender" was granted by Peru under Article X of an existing extradition treaty between the two countries. The department would not comment
