North Yorkshire police chief backs law change bid

NORTH Yorkshire’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner has backed new legislation by stating if someone is convicted of assaulting emergency service workers they should go to prison. Philip Allott wants the new legislation currently going through Parliament to come into force as soon as possible to provide protection for police officers and staff, firefighters and paramedics - as he has revealed a “shocking” number of assaults on emergency workers across North Yorkshire. Last week, the Commissioner shared figures that show 696 assaults against emergency workers in North Yorkshire and York were recorded in the last 12 months alone – in 177 cases these resulted in injuries. Attacks on police officers accounted for over eight in 10 of these incidents.

Engineer may face sex assault charge

1/1 A TELEPHONE engineer may be charged with sexually assaulting a York woman in her home, following a U-turn by police. North Yorkshire Police told the woman in May that no further action was to be taken against the man, who was arrested on suspicion of sexual offences in connection with the incident in March. She was told this decision was ‘due to there not being enough supporting evidence and inconsistencies in the account.’ The woman was outraged, claiming this was a ‘slur on her character,’ and applied for a ‘Victim’s Right to Review’ of the decision. Now she has been told the case is likely to be referred to the Crown Prosecution Service for a charging decision after all, following the review by an independent officer.

Crime Commissioner to focus on domestic abuse during pandemic

NORTH Yorkshire’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner will focus on the impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had on domestic abuse. Philip Allott is planning to host a domestic abuse round-table event later this year to hear from key stakeholders about what more can be done to protect victims. Ahead of that, the commissioner is now inviting those with views from across North Yorkshire and York to get involved - as he questions North Yorkshire Police on their view on what has happened in the county, how survivors have been supported and asks what more can be done to encourage abuse to be reported and tackled.
