50 years ago: The Aug. 5, 1971, edition of The AJT featured a picture of Hugh Morton during his political tour of North Carolina’s 100 counties on behalf of his possible candidacy for Governor. Morton is frequently asked, “Who is looking after the bears at Grandfather Mountain while you’re gone?” The answer is that Hugh Morton’s wife, Julia, is shown here feeding a cub named Nehru, a small Himalayan bear from India. Nehru is not nearly as tame as Grandfather Mountain’s mascot Mildred the Bear, so Julia Morton has to wear heavy gloves and coveralls to keep from being scratched when she feeds him.

Macphie donates hand sanitiser as lockdown eases

Chairman Alastair Macphie Scottish ingredients manufacturer Macphie has donated thousands of bottles of hand sanitiser to local community groups and charities as the UK’s lockdown measures begin to ease. Over 30 organisations, including charities, public services, schools and sport clubs, were among the recipients alongside Covid vaccination centres, FareShare and the Royal National Lifeboat Institute. The family-owned food business temporarily pivoted its production processes in April last year to produce hand sanitiser as demand soared. The business notes that it was commended by Nicola Sturgeon for answering the call to produce the vital supplies for key workers as the UK faced critical shortages at the start of the pandemic.

After being impressed by the work going on at The Haven’s community larder, youngsters at Mill O’ Forest Nursery have set up their own “Mini Haven”. Attendees at the nursery in the town’s Woodview Place created their own larder which became an excellent learning resource for the children. “In Stonehaven we are very lucky to have such a wonderful resource supporting our families in what has been a very difficult year. Many of our children visit The Haven with their parents and staff have been encouraging the children to exploring this through play,” said early years senior practitioner Jackie Leith.
