Science and Technology Secretary Fortunato de la Peña A local study on the mixing of COVID-19 vaccine brands is expected to start in June this year, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said Monday. Science and Technology Secretary Fortunato de la Peña said the DOST must first obtain approval from the Food and Drug Administration and the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board. The study, which is seen to run until November 2022, will study the safety and immunogenicity of combining the Sinovac jab with a different COVID-19 vaccine brand. “Combinations of [the] Sinovac vaccine with other vaccine brands will be the main aim of the study due to it being the most stable vaccine supply in the country,” de la Peña said in a statement.
Published May 6, 2021 3:23pm The order of President Rodrigo Duterte to detain people caught without face masks in public may be “prone to excessive discretion and abuse,” the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) said Thursday. CHR spokesperson Atty. Jacqueline de Guia underscored that disciplinary measures for violators of health protocols must be “reasonable and humane.” “In the absence of clear guidelines, we are concerned that such directive may be prone to excessive discretion and abuse,” she said in a statement. “Given the overcrowded conditions of jails and other detention facilities in the Philippines, detention may not be sound in preventing the further spread of COVID-19 in communities,” she added.
Published May 4, 2021 5:48pm Despite red-tagging concerns, the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) must not be defunded to sustain its projects for reintegration and barangay development, among others, a defense official said Tuesday. Defense Undersecretary Reynaldo Mapagu, chairperson of Task Force Balik-Loob, E-CLIP, and NTF-ELCAC’s Amnesty Program Cluster, said defunding the controversial task force will “jeopardize the progress we have made over the past years.” “It will also validate the propaganda of the CTG (communist terrorist groups) that the government has forsaken these communities,” he claimed in a statement. P19.1 billion in the 2021 budget has been allocated to the controversial task force, which has red-tagged accused of having communist ties schools, organizations, and individuals.
