Suter: Mow the yard!
Over the years, the task of mowing the yard has evolved from shoving a push mower through a mixture of wanted and unwanted grasses to grooming lush sod lawns. Now, edgers, trimmers, blowers, and vacuums complete the job of the super-size and average riding mowers and sophisticated walk-behind mowers.
Grass care, at the least, is a civic duty (six inches or higher risks a city fine), and – at most – it is an art. Even cyclists weigh in on lawn care by asserting that fresh grass clippings on pavement are a skid hazard.
Who can fault the kid for stalling when parents order that the lawn be mowed? Who can blame the adult who walks off the professional lawn maintenance team when he discovers that blowing debris back onto the grass and edging a clean crevice between sidewalk and sod, then string trimming, must be mastered? Only then does he qualify to be trained in the use of a riding mower.
