Gov. elect Greg Gianforte announced Wednesday that he’s appointed Mike Foster to take over the state Department of Agriculture.
Foster has worked as the state executive director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency in Montana since 2018. He was appointed to that position by President Donald Trump.
Foster has served as a Montana legislator, as a policy adviser to former Republican Gov. Judy Martz and also on the state Board of Regents.
According to a news release from Gianforte, Foster’s appointment has received endorsements from the Montana Grain Growers Association, the Montana Farm Bureau Federation and the Montana Stockgrowers Association.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) Governor-elect Greg Gianforte said Wednesday he has picked a former state lawmaker who now directs the federal Farm Service Agency in Montana to serve as the next director of the state Department of Agriculture.
Mike Foster, a Townsend native, is the first agency head to be named by the incoming Republican governor of Montana.
Agriculture has historically been Montana’s biggest industry, with about 27,000 farms and ranches on almost 60 million acres. Combined, those operations produced livestock and crops valued at about $3 billion in 2017, the most recent year available, according to the National Agriculture Statistics Service.

HELENA â Republican Gov.-elect Greg Gianforte on Wednesday announced his first appointee as a state agency director â former state legislator Mike Foster, as director of the state Department of Agriculture.
âWith a robust understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by our producers and a strong commitment to meeting their needs, Mike Foster will serve Montana ag well,â Gianforte said in a statement.
Foster has been working since 2018 as head of the U.S. Department of Agricultureâs Farm Services Agency in Montana.
