New Mexico Senate Unanimously Confirms Sonya L. Smith As Department of Veterans’ Services Secretary DVS News: SANTA FE – Sonya L. Smith was unanimously confirmed by the New Mexico Senate today as secretary of the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services (DVS). The vote was 38-0, officially naming her as the fifth DVS secretary and first African-American to serve as head of the agency. She had been serving on an interim basis since her nomination for the position by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham last October after the retirement of then-Secretary Judy Griego. SANTA FE Three new appointees including a former state legislator are taking over at state agencies under Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. The governor announced Thursday that former Rep. Linda Trujillo, D-Santa Fe, will serve as the new superintendent of the Regulation and Licensing Department, replacing Marguerite Salazar, who retired. Linda Trujillo Trujillo is a lawyer who resigned from the Legislature in July. She has worked in state government as a deputy division director in regulation and licensing, and as state records administrator. Sonya Smith is the new secretary-designate of the Veteran Services Department, where she replaces Judy Griego, a brigadier general who retired.
