Costlow filed a flight plan from Richmond s airport to Festus, Missouri, according to the NTSB; however, the Indiana State Police said the day of the crash that his eventual destination was in Arizona, where he planned to visit family. Shortly after takeoff, the Aeropro CZ A240, a light sport airplane, crashed in a winter wheat field about a half-mile southwest of the runway that angles from northeast to southwest, the report says. The airplane then caught fire. A motorist contacted authorities at 7:49 a.m. that an airplane was burning, the report said. There are no known witnesses to the plane s takeoff or the crash.

(AP) â Indiana State Police say one person is dead after a small plane crash in eastern Indiana. Authorities say one person is dead in a plane crash in eastern Indiana. Police spokesman Coley McCutcheon says the crash happened Sunday south of Richmond Municipal Airport. The pilot was the only person on board. He was identified as 78-year-old Judson J. Costlow, of Richmond. The Federal Aviation Administration says a single-engine Aerotek A240 crashed after departure just south of the Richmond Municipal Airport.
