A 31-year-old Hawaii woman who worked as an executive assistant at U.S. Indo-Pacific Command pleaded guilty Tuesday to knowingly removing classified material related to national defense or foreign relations and keeping it in an unauthorized location. Federal prosecutors said Asia Janay Lavarello admitted to removing and keeping “numerous classified documents, writing and notes” relating to foreign relations and national defense without authority. Lavarello pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court. Her sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 4. She faces up to five years behind bars and a fine of $250,000.
