Auto sales jump 8% from 2020's COVID-stricken first quarter

Print Automakers posted higher sales in the first quarter as General Motors Co., Toyota Motor Corp. and others benefited from strong demand for new cars and trucks in comparison with a year earlier, when the spread of COVID-19 shut showrooms. U.S. auto sales for the quarter surged more than 8%, according to analysts’ estimates. The gain reflects buying as vaccination rates increase and more people return to their pre-pandemic routines. Increased confidence in the economy, along with worries about lower supplies of cars due to computer chip shortages, also helped boost deliveries. Major carmakers either met or handily beat consensus forecasts of analysts, most of whom projected quarterly gains compared with the disastrous performance in the first quarter of last year.

Brexit lorry park could be 'recipe for traffic chaos' in Cheshire

FEARS have been raised over a post-Brexit inland border facility for lorries in Cheshire causing traffic chaos on nearby roads. The Government will use the former Shearings interchange site in Appleton Thorn, south Warrington, as a 24-hour inland border control point for heavy goods vehicles from January 1 after the Brexit transition period ends. There are expected to be up to 300 lorries using the site each day, and development work is currently taking place to get the site ready for operation. However, concerns have been raised over the impact on nearby roads, including in Stretton and at the Lymm interchange. Cllr Tim Martland, of Lymm Parish Council, said: “This is all a recipe for traffic chaos and disruption to journeys for local people.
