The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) Kenya has strongly opposed calls for a referendum at a time when Kenya is battling a pandemic, corruption and other ills.
“Kenya is grappling with many concerns ranging from corruption, mismanagement of public funds, socio-economic challenges, poor leadership, and negative ethnicity. With these lingering challenges, we remain concerned that the calls for a referendum should not be the priority for our country at this time,” ICJ said.
ICJ further rejected the recommendations in the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) saying that they undermine the rule of law.
Kenya: Maraga - Thorn in Flesh of Executive to the End

When Chief Justice David Maraga delivered his last State of the Judiciary address late last month, he struck a conciliatory tone.
The CJ pleaded for forgiveness from those he might have annoyed or whose expectations he did not live up to.
Among those he reached out to was President Kenyatta, maintaining that he had nothing personal against him or his administration despite having several run-ins. It is clear that there is a difference of opinion between me and you. But I want to assure you and the entire nation that I have nothing personal against you. To the contrary, I have given you your respect as our Head of State. I am totally apolitical and hold no brief for any politician or political interest, he said.

As Kenya marked 57 years of being a republic, President Uhuru Kenyatta cast his attention once again on the Judiciary.
Speaking at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday, Uhuru said there is a need to ensure the will of justice spins fairly for all.
To reduce the distance between the disadvantaged and the law, the Judiciary must be subjected to the will of the people.
“It must have an oversight body that is a direct expression of the spirit of the nation.”
He questioned whom the Judiciary is accountable to and where are the Judicial checks and balances located outside of the Judicial Service Commission led and dominated by the officers of the court.
