Chief Justice Roberts issued an order on Monday that temporarily extended the Title 42 expulsion of immigrants for public health reasons begun by the Trump administration in 2020 for the purpose of stirring up extreme American nationalism and xenophobic hatred of immigrants and continued by the Biden administration.
The restrictions, often referred to as Title 42, were put in place under Trump in March 2020. Immigration advocates sued to stop its use saying it goes against obligations to people fleeing to the US to escape persecution.
On Monday, Dec. 19, prosecutors in 19 Republican-led U.S. states filed an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court asking to block the decision of federal judge in Washington.
