MINNEAPOLIS, MN (MNN) – The attorney for Derek Chauvin is asking for a new trial for the former Minneapolis police officer.
In the motion filed Tuesday, attorney Eric Nelson listed prosecutorial and judicial misconduct among several reasons for a new trial.
Nelson says Chauvin’s right to a fair trial was denied when Judge Pete Cahill denied a motion for a change of venue and says his client didn’t get a fair trial as a result of publicity during the proceedings.
Nelson is also requesting a hearing to impeach the verdict based on the grounds that the jury committed misconduct and failed to adhere to instructions during deliberations.”

Minnesota state officials are in crisis mode as they and the rest of the world await jury s decision in the Derek Chauvin trial. Governor Tim Walz declared a public safety emergency Monday, requesting law enforcement backup from neighboring Ohio and Nebraska in addition to the 3,000 active duty National Guard troops on duty guarding businesses and offices.
