Phillip Wise pleads not guilty to murdering Anthony Williams in Norwich

NEW LONDON -  A 40-year-old convicted felon accused of fatally gunning down a man in Norwich last year pleaded not guilty to the crime on Tuesday and waived his right for a probable cause hearing. Phillip Wise made a brief appearance in New London Superior Court via a video monitor as his two attorneys, Marc Miller and Amy Mahon, stood before Judge Hillary Strackbein. Miller said his met with his incarcerated client previously and the two decided to waive the probable cause hearing, a sort of “mini trial” in which prosecutors present evidence and call witnesses in an effort to convince a judge that enough evidence exists in a case to take a defendant to trial.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit unsealed in New London Superior Court on Friday, witnesses around that time saw Williams and his brother walking down Lake Street toward a red Hyundai that was parked outside of a white apartment building. Williams started arguing with someone in the vehicle and as he walked away, a man police identified as Wise got out of the car and fired one shot, striking Williams
