July 12, 2021 - 10:40 pm
CHARLESTON, W.Va. Closing arguments in the legal challenge between local West Virginia governments and drug companies will take place in late July as both sides have rested in the trial.
Attorneys representing drug distributors AmerisourceBergen Drug. Co., Cardinal Health Inc. and McKesson Crop. rested their defense on Monday. The city of Huntington and Cabell County Commission accuse the companies of fueling the opioid crisis by shipping millions of opioid pills between 2008 and 2014 which led to a rise in illegal drug use.
The federal bench trial, which U.S. District Judge David Faber is presiding over, was expected to go through mid-August. Multiple individuals, including former state Health Officer Dr. Rahul Gupta, Huntington Fire Chief Jan Rader and Huntington Mayor Steve Williams, testified in court.
