The price of avocados has increased to its highest level since 1998 - a hike that has worsened since February after the US temporarily halted 80 percent of its imports coming from Mexico.
Experts believe the coming avocado shortage would be short-lived as Peru could help lessen the burden by ramping up production of avocados. Peru exports about 80,000 tons to the US.
In a bid to save more than 25,000 tons of avocados, Mexican authorities met with US officials to outline the creation of a new investigation and security unit to ensure the safety of American inspector.
The drama began when the Cárteles Unidos stamped a batch of avocados from the central state of Puebla as if they had been produced and packaged in Michoacán.
Restaurateurs and shippers expect their supplies to run out in the next two weeks while also contending with avocado prices that have doubled and are expected to keep going up.
