Local journalists and press members who flooded into Ukraine from around the world are risking their lives at every turn to report on the latest develop
what made you pick up and come here? i couldn t watch it. i went to the border, rented a car, saw people walking over. reporter: he said he normally crosses the border twice a day. picking up people who need a ride in ukraine and taking them to safety in poland. when we meet him, he s surrounded by families. this woman tells us she s grateful for the ride, as russian attacks are getting dangerously closer. these are new actions in the war, because we don t have any safety place in ukraine. reporter: as vladimir putin s forces advance on kyiv, towns on the outskirts are war zones. 12 miles to the northwest, ukrainian soldiers helping to evacuate the living and the dead. among those killed, brent renaud, an american journalist. he and fellow american journalist juan arredondo coming to a checkpoint. what is your name? juan. where are you from? the u.s. reporter: juan describing the
$350 million. just in the past two weeks or so more than half a billion dollars of assistance. pamela, where it used to take weeks if not months to get in, it s getting in within days, the white house, the administration promising it will keep going in. oren liebermann live from the pentagon, thank you so much. as oren mentioned, american journalist brent renaud was killed by russian gunfire in northern ukraine near the capital. his friend and fellow journalist juan arredondo was wounded. he described from a hospital in kyiv what happened to them. at the time he didn t know his friend was killed. tell me, please, what is your name. juan. juan? where are you from? the u.s. the u.s. what happened to you? we crossed the first bridge in irpin. we were going to film other refugees leaving, and we got into a car somebody offered to take us to the other bridge,
it was the place in the city where you could see that sort of tide of humanitarian flooding in from some of the hardest hit suburbs. the suburb of irpin, we were there just a couple days ago. from what we understand, the u.s. journalist brent rentaud and also another photographer, juan arredondo were in irpin today covering this story and came under heavy fire. brent, as we know, was killed very tragically. juan appears to be okay. he s in the hospital getting treated for some kind of a gunshot injury. all of this underscoring the tremendous danger of covering this story, but more importantly, underscoring the fact that ukrainian civilians are constantly facing multiple times of targeting, whether it s missiles hitting residential apartment blocks, whether it s mortars hitting civilian
border with poland, a member of nato, killing at least 35 and wounding more than 130. bombardments damage temples at a monastery housing hundreds of refugees as the russian grip tightens on kyiv. russian forces inching closer to the capital, now just 15 miles from kyiv s center. desperation growing in mariupol, under siege now for more than a week. officials say nearly 2,200 residents killed since the onslaught began and we re getting word of the first u.s. casualties in this war. police say two american journalists were shot by russian forces in irpin. one of them award winning documentary filmmaker brent renaud was killed. journalist juan arredondo survived the attack and is being treated at a kyiv hospital.
