Meredith C Carroll: It s hard to be Joyce Rankin

Muck Off You can’t turn on the news these days without hearing about the singular problem sweeping the nation, the one threatening America’s youth at an alarming pace: optional, anonymous student surveys on equity. Colorado parents have testing choices to make

The Colorado Measurement of Academic Success, known as the CMAS test, is a federally mandated end-of-year assessment. Under the 1994 Every Student Succeeds Act, every state must test students in grades 3-8 yearly and once in high school. Tests are administered in math and English/language arts (reading). Students must also be tested periodically in science. If you could decide, what test(s) would you select for your child this spring? CMAS tests how students compare nationally and lets parents and teachers choose what additional help a student might need. The assessment brought the READ Act (Reading to Ensure Academic Development) to Colorado’s forefront in 2012 and again in 2019 (SB19-199). Guest commentary: State board of education representative off mark on Aspen High survey

Guest commentary Students, staff, and the greater Aspen community have all struggled through this global pandemic together. It has not been easy, but it has been rewarding to see that our Aspen High School community has risen to the challenges and persevered despite the myriad obstacles that we have all faced. We have seniors planning to attend top-tier colleges and universities; 100% of our seniors are pursuing their passions and committing to schools or opportunities that are right for them. We have students working on murals for our walls, rehearsing for the spring musical, planning COVID-friendly homecoming events, celebrating our boys’ and girls’ ski teams as state champions, and a team of seniors and staff are working on prom, graduation, an awards ceremony and a senior Ex Ed. In addition, we have also begun to address equity and inclusion at Aspen High School.
