Carl Sherman, Sr.,) AUSTIN State Rep. Carl Sherman Sr. is trying to diversify the Texas Capitol one legislative office at a time. The DeSoto Democrat, who began his second term this month, has lobbied his fellow lawmakers to join his “Diversity Under the Dome” initiative to recruit people from different backgrounds as legislative staffers. Sherman challenges lawmakers to go one step further by hiring staffers from backgrounds that are different from their own.

(Photo by David Brendan Hall) Since applications opened for the Live Music Venue Preservation Fund last Friday, operators of 79 different venues have filed for assistance that could total up to $160,000 for each business. The effort, a component of the City of Austin’s SAVES resolution, includes two phases: $20,000 of “emergency funding” and additional “enhanced funding” of up to $140,000 that would be doled out in monthly installments to qualifying venues based on a variety of factors.

Vonda Gail Briley, age 75, of Florence, passed away Tuesday, December 8, 2020. Visitation will be today, December 10th from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home of Florence. The service will be Saturday, December 12th at 1:30 p.m. at Grace Life Church of The Shoals. She will lie-in-state one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. She was a member of Grace Life Church of The Shoals and was retired as Director of Food Services at the church. Preceding her in death were her mother, Vertle King Eddy; father, Dubert D. Eddy; husband, Lonnie G. Briley, Jr. Survivors are her son, Jason Briley; sister, Joyce James.
