Column: Olympics spotlights female surfers at long last

Print Carissa Moore secured a special place in sports history with her capture of the Olympics first women’s surfing gold medal. Her feat came as no surprise to Jim Kempton, president of the California Surf Museum in Oceanside. “There couldn’t be a more perfect person to take the stand for the United States and Hawaii,” her home state, says the former editor-in-chief of Surfer magazine, who is a friend of Carissa and her father. In addition to being recognized as the best woman surfer, Kempton says, “she is the epitome of the aloha spirit and what the Olympics stand for.”

Author: Allen Carter Updated: 12:54 AM EST January 20, 2021 Don and Joyce Hoffman have been married for 67 years and they have not been apart for much of it.  The couple, in their 90s, reside at Hooverwood Living, a long-term care facility in Indianapolis.  Earlier this year, Joyce spent more than a month in isolation, away from Don, after a bout with COVID-19 in June.  She said she was disoriented, but fortunately did not have any more severe symptoms. Joyce said the hardest part was the loneliness.

San Onofre s place in surfing history subject of new book

Print David Matuszak has been surfing the waters of San Diego County for more than 40 years. One of his favorite spots is San Onofre State Beach on the northern tip of Camp Pendleton. About eight years ago, he got the idea to write about the memories of his friend Wally Duesler, a pioneer surfer who first surfed San Onofre in 1937. He envisioned a 50- to 100-page booklet. But before he even began his research, Duesler told his surfing buddies about the idea and they wanted to share their memories, too. “From there the project became a runaway train. What I thought would be a six-month project became an eight-year odyssey and labor of love,” Matuszak said.
