I was always interested in radio from the time I could control the radio dial. A clock radio woke me up in the morning. I lived in the New York City area until I moved to Rochester in 1981 and I heard many of the great radio performers including Jean Shepherd, Bob and Ray, and Wolfman Jack. When I went to college I joined the completely student run radio station where I did a number of shows and got a grounding in how radio works.

I worked for New York State (in a job that had nothing to do with radio or music) from 1971-2002. In 1995 I met the then station manager Eric Gruner of Jazz 90.1 at a jazz event at the Memorial Art Gallery and I casually asked whether the station needed anybody. He said they were always looking for staff. The result was that I started a Sunday evening program within a few weeks of meeting Eric. Although I knew about the station I had never really thought of working
