The Gainesville Sun Focus on real problems Observing Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Republicans in the Florida Legislature studying recent events and then devising legislative remedies designed to eliminate outcomes they don’t like is very educational. For example, take the most recent election outcome and recent protests against systemic discrimination. Despite an outcome in Florida that went largely in favor of the GOP, they are trying their very best to limit voter participation even more in Florida. DeSantis anti-protest proposals are tailored to discouraging the Black Lives Matter protests. Despite the fact that he is a lawyer, his proposals all blatantly encroach upon our First Amendment rights to free speech and assembly and are way over-broad in their reach.
