Despedida of Debold Sinas, arrests of 7 activists
By ANNE MARXZE D. UMIL
MANILA – With the retirement of Police Chief Gen. Debold Sinas and with his birthday today, May 8, human rights group Karapatan believes that the recent series of arrests of activists is the general’s despedida.
Cristina Palabay, secretary general of Karapatan, made this statement after four individuals were arrested on May 6 in the Southern Tagalog region. The day before, Karapatan alerted the public after receiving information that another series of police and military raids in Southern Tagalog is in the offing.

Sta. Rosa, the spokesperson of Jovenes Anakbayan, was nabbed by cops inside her house past 3 a.m., according to Anakbayan Naga City.
The group accused the police of planting guns and grenades inside Sta. Rosa’s home before detaining her at the Criminal Investigation and Detention Group (CIDG) headquarters in the city.
In a statement released Monday, May 2, One Big Fight for Human Rights and Democracy condemned the arrest of Sta. Rosa as well as other progressive leaders who were also arrested on Sunday.
“The Atenean community calls for the Ateneo Manila University administration to vehemently condemn this blatant attack on Atenean students nationwide. We call for the administration to support the call for Sasah’s release and to provide the assistance she needs at this difficult time,” its statement read.
