REDress Day Bringing Awareness to MMIWG2S  May 5, 2021  Local Journalism Initiative Reporter Today is REDress Day, also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2 spirit people. The REDress awareness campaign started in 2010 by Metis Artist Jamie Black. The REDress Campaign has been gaining momentum across Turtle Island since it began in 2010, each dress representing an Indigenous woman who has been murdered or is missing.  The Red Dress has become a symbol of the thousands of victims of violence against Indigenous women and girls. The colour red represents spirit in Anishinaabe culture, because red is the only color that spirits can see. People wear red for MMIWG2S so that the souls of those they’ve lost can be with them.

Addressing Indigenous needs in the 2021 Federal Budget April 21, 2021  Local Journalism Initiative Reporter The federal budget was announced yesterday, and with that bringing $18 billion in new money to indigenous communities. The proposed 2021 budget on Indigenous spending is a 300 percent jump from the $4.5 billion announced in the spring 2019 budget. Indigenous communities will receive an additional $1.2 billion in response to COVID-19 measures. This will ensure support to hire nurses, help at-risk people to isolate, and provide PPE to those who need it, and ensure the unique needs of the first nations, Metis, Inuit and on and off reserve urban indigenous communities are met through the pandemic.

 Local Journalism Initiative Reporter TORONTO, ONT-The Native Women’s Resource Centre in Toronto (NWRCT) is offering Status Card Clinic’s by appointment. Nicole Balthazar is the Investing in Women’s Future Coordinator for the NWRCT, and the muscle behind the Status Card Clinic.  One of the core needs identified by the community was the need for assistance in gaining status. “A lot of the time the resources that are offered in the community, you need to show status. A lot of the clients don’t have that, whether it’s because they’re a part of the 60’s scoop or adoption, or just life happened,” Nicole comments to SaultOnline.
