CARROLL TOWNSHIP - With more and more heading outdoors to embrace wildlife as the Biggest Week in American Birding approaches, a group of researchers is hoping for some help from the public with a study of one species they are sure to see and hear trumpeter swans.
According to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service zone biologist Joshua Booker, trumpeter swans across five states, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, Iowa and Wisconsin, and Canadian province Manitoba, were equipped with GPS-GSM transmitters on neck collar tags starting in 2019.
Researchers are studying the species’ migration patterns, movements, habitat use, genetics and survival. More specifically, they are aiming to learn more about the timing between breeding season behavioral changes, such as establishing territories, incubating and brood rearing.
