A 24-year-old Christchurch man has been jailed for three years after being caught with thousands of child-harm images described by a judge as the most repellent imaginable.

Joshua Alan Bainton has also been put on the child sex offenders register.
“I have been involved in this type of work for about 15 years and I can’t remember ever coming across material as offensive as this, which is saying something,” the judge said. “It is important to remember that whilst you are just looking at the screen, at the end of the lens is a little kid who is being abused and defiled in the worst way imaginable. This is not a victimless crime.” While the nature of the material was “horrific”, the judge took into account Bainton’s attempts at rehabilitation since his arrest, the fact he had co-operated with the investigation, and his guilty pleas. The judge said some credit could also be given for Bainton’s young age.

A Christchurch man has been sentenced to three years imprisonment in the Christchurch District Court today, after pleading guilty to a number of charges relating to the possession of objectionable publications depicting the sexual exploitation and abuse of children. This follows an investigation by Te Tari Taiwhenua, Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) Digital Child Exploitation Team.
Joshua Alan Bainton, 24, of Christchurch, was charged after child sexual exploitation and abuse material was located within a cloud storage account created and operated by him.
