GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) A former airman at Malmstrom Air Force Base has pleaded guilty to negligent homicide in the accidental shooting death of a fellow airman in February 2020, Cascade County prosecutors said.
Christopher Domonic Contardo, 26, pleaded guilty Wednesday in the death of Tristen Carlson, 21, of Sidney during an off-base party hosted by Contardo.
Defense attorney Nathan Hoines said both Contardo and Carlson had been drinking and were “messing around” with a 9mm handgun early on Feb. 2, 2020. The gun discharged while Contado was holding it, killing Carlson.
As a former member of the military police, Contardo acknowledged he had firearms training and that shooting Carlson was a result of negligence.

A former Malmstrom Air Force Base airman who shot and killed another serviceman in February 2020 has changed his plea in Cascade County District Court.
Christopher Dominic Contardo, 26, pleaded guilty Wednesday to negligent homicide for fatally shooting Tristan Carlson during a party in the early morning hours of Feb. 2, 2020.
Cascade County Attorney Josh Racki said the plea agreement came after an all-day mediation session with members of Carlson’s family present. Racki told District Judge John Parker that the family got a chance to confront Contardo, which was “one of the reasons for a successful mediation.”
According to Contardo’s plea agreement, the state and the defense are recommending a six-year commitment to the Montana Department of Corrections with six years suspended and a 150-day commitment to the Great Falls Pre-Release Center.

GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) A man who pleaded no contest to deliberate homicide for killing a woman at a Great Falls motel in 2017 faces at least 20 years in prison, the Great Falls Tribune reported Thursday.
The trial for Stanley Isaac Lebeau, 54, began this week after a yearlong delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Defendants who plead no contest accept convictions but do not admit guilt.
After two days of testimony, the prosecution and the defense negotiated a plea agreement Wednesday that calls for a 60-year prison sentence with a requirement that Lebeau serve 20 years before becoming eligible for parole. District Judge John Kutzman did not schedule a sentencing date.
