State health department extends epidemic order

Steve Foley Petoskey News-Review The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services extended its gatherings and mask epidemic order on Friday, including an expansion of mask requirements to children ages 2-4 to further protect Michigan residents. According to the state health department, expanding the mask rule to children ages 2-4 requires a “good faith effort to ensure that these children wear masks while in gatherings at childcare facilities or camps.” The masking rule for children takes effect April 26. It addresses the increase in cases among younger Michiganders and follows recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance.

Health officials on Tuesday suspended the use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine in Michigan pending the outcome of a federal investigation into six cases in which women who received the drug developed blood clots. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office announced the temporary suspension of the single-dose vaccine after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommended it throughout the country. “The safety and health of Michiganders will always come first,” said Whitmer spokesman Bobby Leddy. “We will follow the FDA’s guidance to temporarily pause the Johnson & Johnson vaccine out of an abundance of caution, and adapt our vaccine strategy going forward until a further review of the data can be conducted.”

Northern Michigan health officials say coronavirus variant is causing larger outbreaks

Credit Adobe Stock Northern Michigan public health officials said Thursday that the growing prevalence of the U.K. COVID-19 variant, which is more contagious than the original strain of the virus, is making outbreaks increasingly difficult to control. Clusters of the virus are increasingly concentrated in younger members of the population, now that nearly 70% of people older than 75 are vaccinated in some counties, said Dr. Josh Meyerson, the medical director for three local health departments in the northern Lower Peninsula. “Some of our outbreaks seem to end up growing bigger, and they take longer to control,” said Meyerson. “In some cases we have documented that the variant was the predominant strain. Other ones we can surmise that.”

ALPENA Local public health officials on Monday announced a Northeast Michigan resident completed isolation after becoming infected with a variant of the COVID-19 virus. The Presque Isle County resident infected with the B.1.1.7. virus was identified through routine active surveillance by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. “Since the variant is more contagious, the virus could potentially infect more people with less exposure,” District Health Department No. 4 Medical Director Josh Meyerson said in a news release. Meyerson said it is “imperative” community members strengthen prevention measures by wearing masks, social distancing, avoiding crowds, washing hands frequently and getting vaccinated.
