Board of Education staff action discussed by JCC By Toni Milbourne - For the Chronicle | Jan 22, 2021 Gibson CHARLES TOWN The Jefferson County Commission heard comments from several members of the public last Thursday, following the addition of an agenda item pertaining to the Jefferson County Schools superintendent and disciplinary actions taken against two bus drivers. Commissioner Steve Stolipher added an item to the agenda, calling for a discussion on the procedure for removal of county, school district and municipal officers having fixed terms pursuant to W. Va. Code 6-6-7. The addition of the item followed action taken by Superintendent Bondy Shay Gibson last week, when she suspended two bus drivers, following a complaint that the two had attended the rally in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 6 that turned violent. Since that time, both individuals have been cleared of any potential wrongdoing, and have filed a civil rights violation suit against Gibson in federal court.

Currently, the Jefferson County Courthouse is the only early voting location. Toni Milbourne CHARLES TOWN In a special meeting on Jan. 15, the Jefferson County Commission had a discussion on adding an additional location for early voting in future elections. The talk was held after county voters waited sometimes more than two hours to early vote in the Nov. 2020 election. “I think we need to start the process for another early voting location,” said JCC President Josh Compton.

Tabitha Johnston SHEPHERDSTOWN Shepherdstown may be getting a new Sheetz service station in the future, if a zoning map amendment is passed by the Jefferson County Commission. During the JCC’s regular session meeting on Dec. 3, via the GoToWebinar platform, the JCC discussed the rezoning request, which was recommended by the Jefferson County Planning Commission. “The role of the Planning Commission is to provide input into whether a suggestion fits within the comprehensive plan,” said County Planner Jennifer Brockman, referring to Jefferson County’s comprehensive plan.
