KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 (Reuters) - Malaysian authorities on Wednesday reported 6,075 new coronavirus cases, a daily record as the country grapples with a surge in infections.
The figure breaks the previous high recorded on Jan. 30, when the health ministry reported 5,728 daily cases.
On Monday, Malaysia’s health minister said the government may consider a total lockdown of the country’s most industrial state of Selangor if current coronavirus curbs fail to contain the spread of COVID-19.
Selangor accounted for more than a third of Wednesday’s caseload at 2,251 cases, according to ministry data.
Wednesday’s figures push Malaysia’s total cases closer to 480,000, the third highest number of infections in the region behind Indonesia and the Philippines. (Reporting by Joseph Sipalan Editing by Ed Davies)

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 (Reuters) - The Malaysian economy should see a less severe slump in the first quarter of 2021 than it did in the previous three months, helped by resilient manufacturing activity and growing external demand, according to economists polled by Reuters.
The economy is seen contracting 1.9% in the period of January to March, according to the median estimate of a Reuters poll of 11 economists, an improvement on a 3.4% contraction recorded in the fourth quarter of last year.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 (Reuters) - Malaysia’s industrial production rose more than expected in March, up 9.3% from a year earlier on higher manufacturing and electrical output, government data showed on Thursday.
The production index measures factory output in manufacturing, mining and electricity generation.
The expansion in March was better than the 7.8% gain forecast by 10 economists in a Reuters poll, and marked a sharp increase from the 1.5% rise recorded in February.
Manufacturing output rose 12.7% year-on-year in March, driven by transport equipment and other manufactures, the Statistics Department said in a statement.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 (Reuters) - Malaysia will begin a parallel COVID-19 innoculation programme this week for people who chose to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine, after it was removed from an ongoing rollout due to public fears over its safety, a minister said on Monday.
Reports of possible links to very rare blood clots have dented confidence in the shot in Malaysia and elsewhere.
AstraZeneca has pointed to regulator recommendations that the vaccine is safe and effective, though some countries have suspended its use due to rising unease or limited it to certain age groups.
