Many countries reacted fast to the news that South African scientists had detected a new variant. Within a day, the EU, UK, US, Israel and other countries imposed travel restrictions on southern African countries.
"It will be necessary to take some precautions. As to exactly what nature and to what extent, that is to be discussed," said health minister Dr Joseph Phaahla.
The world is worried about the new COVID-19 omicron variant, first detected in South Africa. Many countries have imposed travel bans. In South Africa itself, people fear the restrictions more than the virus.
